BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana House of Representatives took a unanimous step Tuesday to memorialize one of the most iconic figures in the state’s sporting history. In a 46-0 vote, lawmakers approved House Concurrent Resolution 4, which seeks to rename a prominent stretch of State Road 45 in Bloomington as “Bob Knight Memorial Way.”

Honoring “The General”
The resolution, authored by State Representative Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville), aims to designate the portion of the highway between College Avenue and Fee Lane in honor of the legendary former Indiana University basketball coach.

While Knight is globally recognized for his 29-season tenure (1971–2000) and his three national championships, the resolution specifically highlights his impact beyond the hardwood. Lawmakers noted Knight’s deep commitment to Indiana University’s academic mission, particularly his role in establishing the Bob Knight Library Endowment Fund, which has contributed millions of dollars to the university’s library system.
A Legacy of Discipline and Excellence
Known affectionately as “The General,” Knight’s coaching philosophy was built on a foundation of rigorous discipline and academic accountability. During his time at IU, he achieved:
- 662 victories with the Hoosiers.
- 11 Big Ten Conference titles.
- A reputation for ensuring his players graduated at rates far exceeding national averages.
Next Steps
Following the unanimous House vote, the resolution now moves to the Indiana Senate for consideration. If the measure passes the Senate, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will be formally urged to install commemorative signage along the specified route in Bloomington.
“This designation recognizes a man whose influence on our state and its flagship university reached far beyond the basketball court.” — Summary of House Concurrent Resolution 4
