BNL wrestlers finish 9th at Old Capitol

CORYDON – Bedford North Lawrence finished ninth in the Old Capitol Classic during high school wrestling action on Saturday.

The Stars totaled 36 points in the 10-team field. New Albany won the team crown with 245 points.

“This was definitely not our best performance of the season,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “We wrestled flat and we looked tired. We seemed to be about a half a step behind our opponents from the very first match. I am not sure if it was a result of a busy week, or a young team and a long season. There were some quality teams there today, but we just looked lackluster.

“The biggest scare was when Wyatt (Philpott) got injured in his first match (against Yanni Nunez of Bloomington North at 138 pounds). It was a tough blow for him, but I am hopeful we can get him healed and ready for the sectionals at the very least. There is a good chance that he can be healed up in time for conference next weekend.”

BNL will compete in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet at Jeffersonville on Jan. 17.
