Bloomington offers free downtown parking for holiday shoppers

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington residents and visitors will be able to park downtown for free during the peak holiday season as the city waives parking fees beginning 5 p.m. on Dec. 18 through the end of Dec. 26. The temporary change is intended to make it easier for shoppers to visit downtown businesses while completing their holiday plans.

The free parking applies to all on-street metered spaces as well as city-operated parking garages, including the Morton Street, Walnut Street, Fourth Street, and Trades District garages. City officials say the move is designed to encourage foot traffic and make downtown more accessible during one of the busiest retail periods of the year.

Local leaders are encouraging residents to take advantage of the free parking by supporting downtown merchants, many of which offer unique gifts, dining options, and holiday specials. Shopping locally, officials note, helps strengthen the local economy and supports small businesses during a critical time of year.

The city wishes residents a safe and enjoyable holiday season and encourages everyone to enjoy the convenience of free parking while celebrating and shopping in downtown Bloomington.
