Washington Police and Fire battle for charity in Red Kettle Challenge

WASHINGTON– The Washington Police Department and Washington Fire Department are set to go head-to-head in a friendly “Battle of the Badges” bell-ringing competition to raise funds for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

The fundraising challenge will take place next Friday, December 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside the Washington Walmart. The goal is to see which department can raise the most donations for local families in need.

The Competition Details

To ensure fairness, each department will staff one Walmart entrance and switch doors halfway through the day. The final tally will be counted at 5 p.m.

  • Police Department: Officers joked about using singing and dancing to encourage donations.
  • Fire Department: Firefighters plan to bring Halle, the firehouse Dalmatian, to help draw crowds.

The idea for the competition originated with community member Jeremy Adams. Salvation Army coordinator Brenda Sabaki noted that the challenge is a fun way to boost holiday giving.

All funds collected through the Red Kettle campaign will stay in Daviess County to assist families facing emergencies or hardship.

The Salvation Army also emphasized the continued need for volunteers and encouraged residents to sign up for bell-ringing shifts at RegisterToRing.com. Residents are invited to stop by the Walmart next Friday to enjoy the friendly rivalry and support a vital local cause.
