BEDFORD – Lawrence County motorists are advised to use extreme caution when traveling over the Stumphole Bridge on Stumphole Bridge Road. Lawrence County Highway crews are actively working to repair the bridge over the White River, and the theft of warning signs has complicated the situation.
Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder reported to the Commissioners on Tuesday morning that someone had stolen the necessary warning signs placed at the repair site.
Due to the nature of the repair work, temporary concrete blocks and signage have been placed on the bridge deck to section off the repair zone and protect both motorists and work crew members. Motorists are strictly warned to be careful and reduce speed when navigating the bridge until the repairs are completed and the blocks are removed.

“I ask that residents not remove or steal the signage,” Sowder added, stressing the danger this theft poses to public safety and highway workers.
County Prepares for Winter Storms
In addition to the ongoing bridge repair, Sowder assured the Commissioners that the highway department is fully prepared for the impending winter weather.

“We had 500 tons of salt delivered. We are ready,” Sowder announced.
Crews are ready to pretreat bridges and roadways in anticipation of a winter storm. Sowder makes routine checks on county bridges and roadways and stays in constant contact with Lawrence County Central Dispatch to quickly address areas that become slick or snow-covered. Furthermore, piles of salt and sand have been placed on county roads for residents who may need it if they get stuck.
Commissioner President Rodney Fish addressed the community’s frequent questions regarding travel advisories.
“We take issuing those very seriously,” he said. “We don’t issue them unless absolutely necessary. It’s every individual’s decision to be out on snow-covered roads. People have to take responsibility for their own safety.”
