Stargazers invited to free Geminid Meteor Shower viewing at Fairfax SRA

MONROE LAKE – The Monroe Lake Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will host a free night-sky viewing event at Fairfax State Recreation Area featuring the annual Geminid meteor shower, which is expected to peak just after midnight.

The Geminids are typically the most active meteor shower of the year, with the potential to produce up to 120 meteors per hour under clear skies. Visitors can also view Jupiter and the waning crescent moon through a telescope provided by staff.

Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets—preferably blankets, organizers noted, as lying down offers the best view of the sky. Guests should also pack warm layers and a reusable travel mug for complimentary hot cocoa, which helps reduce waste from paper cups.

Admission to Fairfax SRA will be free for the event. A donation box will be available for those who wish to support similar programming.

Organizers advise checking the event page before heading out. Cloudy conditions could force a cancellation if the skies are not clear enough for viewing.
