Indiana DNR brings back ‘Happy Little (Virtual) 5K’ for 2026

INDIANA—The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF) have opened registration for the fourth annual Happy Little (Virtual) 5K, a fundraising event inspired by the late painter Bob Ross.

The virtual event encourages participants to complete a 5K distance anywhere they choose—running, biking, skating, paddling, or using a mobility device—between April 18 and April 26, 2026. This timeframe intentionally includes Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 24).

Proceeds from the 5K are dedicated to tree planting and healthy forest initiatives within Indiana State Parks. The 2025 event drew over 2,300 participants, raising more than $41,000 to support these conservation efforts.

“The Happy Little 5K is a great way to celebrate Indiana State Parks and Indiana’s special connection to Bob Ross, while getting healthy outdoor exercise at the same time,” said Brandt Baughman, director of Indiana State Parks.

The $36 registration fee includes a keepsake Happy Little T-shirt, a commemorative bib number, and a finisher’s medal. Participants are reminded to select “Indiana” during registration to ensure their contribution directly supports Indiana State Parks.

The virtual event was created by the Michigan DNR and Bob Ross, Inc., referencing the famous artist who filmed his iconic show, The Joy of Painting, in Muncie for over a decade.
