A Day to Honor Service: Veterans Day and the meaning of November 11th

NATIONAL — Each year on November 11th, the United States pauses to observe Veterans Day, a national holiday dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. While often confused with Memorial Day, Veterans Day is distinct—it is a celebration intended to thank and honor all American veterans, both living and deceased, who have served honorably in the military, in wartime or in peacetime.

The history of this day is deeply rooted in the end of World War I, and its evolution reflects the nation’s commitment to honoring all who have served in uniform.

The holiday’s origins date back to November 11, 1918, when the armistice—a temporary cessation of hostilities—between the Allied nations and Germany took effect, effectively ending World War I. At this moment, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Armistice Day was initially marked.

Key legislative steps cemented the day’s status and purpose:

  • 1938: An act of Congress designated November 11th as a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and known as “Armistice Day.”
  • 1954: Following World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the 1938 Act. At the urging of veteran service organizations, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law on June 1, 1954.

The observance faced a period of confusion in the late 1960s. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was signed, moving four national holidays, including Veterans Day, to Mondays to create three-day weekends for federal employees.

The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed on October 25, 1971. However, it quickly became apparent that November 11th held significant historical and patriotic meaning for many citizens, and states continued to celebrate the original date. Recognizing the public’s desire, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law on September 20, 1975, returning the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11th, beginning in 1978.
