INDIANA – As colder weather settles across Indiana, state officials are reminding residents to prioritize safety when using space heaters this winter. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is issuing a strong warning, noting that the improper use of portable heaters is a leading cause of home fires during the winter months.
To prevent potential tragedies, IDHS urges Hoosiers to follow critical safety guidelines:
- Direct Plug-In Only: Space heaters must always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. The agency warns explicitly against plugging them into an extension cord or power strip, as this can easily lead to overheating and electrical fires.
- Maintain Clearance: Heaters should be kept at least three feet (one meter) away from anything flammable, including curtains, bedding, furniture, and clothing.
- Turn Off When Unattended: Officials emphasize the importance of turning off space heaters before leaving a room or going to bed.
Authorities are urging Hoosiers to stay alert, ensure heating devices are properly maintained, and always prioritize fire safety when warming their homes.
