INDIANAPOLIS— On Tuesday morning, volunteers from the All IN For Democracy coalition will deliver care packages to all 50 state senators and key staff on the third floor of the Indiana Statehouse.
The delivery comes one day after Gov. Mike Braun announced he will call lawmakers back to the Statehouse starting on Nov. 3 to redraw the state’s Congressional maps, which were approved with no challenges four years ago. A spokeswoman for the Indiana Senate Republicans told the media on Monday that there still are not enough votes in that legislative body to support new maps.
Each package includes sweet and salty snacks and a can of Red Bull—“fuel” to keep lawmakers energized to stand up to Washington outsiders pushing mid-decade redistricting and to stay focused on the issues Hoosiers actually care about, like rising energy bills, inflation, and property taxes.
The groups of League of Women Voters—Indiana, Common Cause Indiana, and Indiana Conservation Voters will make brief remarks beginning at 10 a.m. ET at the Indiana Statehouse at 200 West Washington Street in Indianapolis, and then deliveries to offices immediately afterward.
Hoosiers have spoken out for more than two months against reopening Congressional maps just a few years after they were drawn. The care packages are a positive reminder that doing the right thing takes endurance—and that voters want lawmakers to resist outside pressure and keep working on real-world challenges.
