MONROE CO. — Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marté announced the creation of the Major Crash Investigation (MCI) Team, a new specialized unit dedicated to thoroughly investigating the most serious and complex traffic incidents in the county.
The MCI Team’s primary focus will be responding to and investigating crashes involving fatal or catastrophic injury or other unusually complex crashes. The team consists of specially trained deputies with advanced skills in crash reconstruction, evidence collection, impaired driving enforcement, and technical analysis. The unit will work closely with local, state, and federal partners as necessary.
The following deputies have been selected to serve on the MCI Team:
- Sergeant Kyle Moulden – Team Commander
- Sergeant Bennett Dillon – Crash Reconstruction Specialist
- Detective Dillen Friend – Crash Reconstruction Specialist
- Corporal Gunnar Ortlieb – Drug Recognition Expert

Sheriff Marté emphasized that establishing the MCI Team is part of his ongoing commitment to public safety, professionalism, and transparency in law enforcement operations.

“When tragedies occur on our roadways, the public deserves a thorough, professional investigation,” said Sheriff Marté. “Thanks to the support of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, our Major Crash Investigation Team will have the specialized equipment and training needed to provide answers to families, ensure accountability, and enhance roadway safety in Monroe County.”
To ensure the team is equipped to conduct precise, reliable investigations, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office secured grant funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI). These funds are being used to purchase specialized technical equipment that will enable deputies to collect and analyze crash data with greater accuracy and efficiency.
