Scott County first responder recovering at home after life-threatening illness

SCOTTSBURG — Dillon Williams, a dedicated 26-year-old EMT with Scott County EMS and a volunteer firefighter with the Vienna Township Volunteer Fire Department, has returned home and is undergoing physical therapy after a terrifying, life-threatening battle with a rare illness.

Williams’ recovery marks a significant positive turning point following a severe medical crisis that had baffled specialists. As previously reported by WBIW, Williams was in critical condition at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, battling what doctors suspected was a rare and extreme reaction to a common cold. His wife, Brooke Williams, had been at his side, making “life-or-death decisions” as his condition rapidly deteriorated.

According to Brooke Williams, Dillon, who was otherwise healthy, became critically ill incredibly fast, moving through four hospitals in several weeks. Doctors noted there was “no reason that somebody so young” would get sick so quickly. The severe reaction led to a dangerous buildup of fluid around his heart that required emergency removal.

Fortunately, his condition began to stabilize after arriving at Norton Audubon Hospital. Within 24 hours, Brooke noted he had made “leaps and bounds, changing everything.”

Dillon has since left the hospital and is now focused on a long recovery journey at home. He is currently going through physical therapy to regain his strength and balance, a necessity due to the severity of his illness.

Brooke shared a few emotional moments from his final days in the hospital, including his joy at seeing his infant daughter, Amelia, and getting outside for fresh air on the helicopter pad during a physical therapy session.

The Williams family expressed immense gratitude for the support and community outreach they have received during Dillon’s hospitalization and transition home. A GoFundMe has been established to help the family with expenses as Dillon navigates the recovery process.
