BEDFORD – When Sharon* arrived at Becky’s Place in February 2025, she was looking for more than a roof over her head. Years of generosity had left her drained, financially and emotionally. After her former roommates left her responsible for all the bills, she lost her home and needed a safe place to start over.
From the moment she entered Becky’s Place, staff noticed her warmth and willingness to help others. But Sharon was also determined to make a change. Through the program’s guidance, she began learning the importance of setting healthy boundaries. Each time she practiced standing up for herself, her confidence grew.

Sharon received a small Social Security income, but she wanted to be more independent. Within weeks of arriving, she found a part-time job and started saving. Six weeks later, her hard work paid off — she was able to move into an apartment of her own.
Shortly after moving out, Sharon learned she needed knee surgery. Volunteers from Becky’s Place helped her through recovery, driving her to appointments and offering support. As soon as she regained her strength, she returned to the shelter — not as a resident, but as a volunteer.
Now, Sharon spends much of her time giving back to the organization that once helped her. She assists with sorting and organizing donations, doing laundry, and even painting rooms to make the shelter feel more like home for new residents. She has also joined a local church community introduced to her by a staff member.
Today, Sharon has saved enough money to buy a car and continues to volunteer regularly. Her journey at Becky’s Place is a testament to perseverance, gratitude, and the life-changing impact of a supportive community.
