Storm-damaged Overlook Park in Shoals reopens for prime leaf-peeping season

SHOALS – A popular Martin County spot for scenic viewing and fall foliage, Overlook Park on US 50 in Shoals, is ready for visitors after summer storm damage forced a temporary closure.

Overlook Pass

The park, which offers spectacular views of the White River area, reopened in July after cleanup and repairs were completed following an extensive summer storm. This came shortly after a series of significant improvements had been completed last spring.

According to Southern Indiana Business Report, a total of $16,000 in improvements was made to the decades-old roadside stop, including upgrades that transformed the park, which will now also serve as a welcome center for the town of Shoals.

The upgrades included:

  • A large deck and observation area.
  • A paved walkway connecting the parking area to the deck and shelterhouse.
  • A new mural.
  • A kiosk to hold visitor information.

The initial improvements were made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Creative Convergence program, an initiative of the Indiana Arts Commission designed to help communities enhance their public spaces with art. The Martin County Community Foundation and the Martin County Tourism Council provided additional financial support.
