MITCHELL – The Mitchell community is mourning the loss of a well-known and beloved resident, Albert Mesarosh, 87, after his body was recovered from a field on the west side of town on Thursday.

According to Mitchell Police Chief Troy Lobosky, officers from the Mitchell Police Department, with assistance from the Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigation unit, located Mr.Mesarosh at around 11:37 a.m. in the 3000 block of State Road 37.

Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that health and environmental exposure contributed to his passing, with no immediate signs of foul play, said Chief Lobosky.

“There was nothing suspicious,” he added. “More testing is being done at this time, but we don’t suspect foul play.”

Mesarosh was last seen on September 7, 2025, and was reported missing three days later.

Chief Lobosky noted that Mr. Mesarosh was a familiar face in the community, often seen walking or running in the area. He was widely known for his kindness and his unwavering support for the annual Persimmon Festival.

Mesarosh was particularly well-known for his commitment to the Persimmon 5K, a race he had run every year since he started running at the age of 39. Mesarosh is the only person who has run in every Persimmon 5K to date.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends,” Chief Lobosky stated in the release.
