Perdue Farms to lay off 293 employees at Washington, Indiana plant

WASHINGTON — Perdue Farms has announced it will be eliminating 293 positions at its facility in Washington, Indiana. The company stated the layoffs will affect the second production shift of its turkey operations and are scheduled to take effect on October 10.

Perdue Farms attributed the decision to a variety of factors, including shifts in consumer demand and a decrease in turkey flocks. “Changes in consumer demand, decreasing turkey flocks, and how we produce and supply our products have impacted the Washington operations in recent years, making the change to one production shift necessary to achieve operational efficiencies,” the company’s statement read.

Perdue expressed its commitment to supporting the affected workers during this transition. “A decision like this, affecting our associates, is something we take very seriously. We value the many contributions of our Washington associates, and we are committed to doing all we can to support impacted associates during this transition,” the statement added.

The company confirmed that the layoffs are isolated to the Washington facility and will not impact other Perdue operations or farms in Indiana.
