BEDFORD — A new Little Free Library is coming to the upper level of the Lawrence County Courthouse, providing a welcome distraction for those waiting for court hearings. The initiative, proposed by Judge Anah Hewetson Gouty at Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting, was granted permission to move forward.
The library will feature a bookcase stocked with books suitable for both adults and children. Visitors will be able to browse and read the books while they wait, with the understanding that the books will be returned to the shelf for others to enjoy.

“I think it’s something beneficial for the people who are here,” stated Judge Gouty. “It gives them something to occupy their time other than scrolling on their phone.”
This new addition is part of a broader, statewide initiative by Indiana judges, including those from the Indiana Court of Appeals, to create small, accessible libraries in courthouses. The project is modeled after the “Little Free Library” concept often seen in neighborhoods, aiming to provide a positive and enriching experience for the public.
