Indiana State Police concludes investigation into K-9 death

BLOOMFIELD — Following a three-week investigation by the Indiana State Police (ISP), the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office has decided not to file criminal charges in the death of a Martinsville Police Department K-9 named Sunny.

The investigation was initiated on July 30, 2025, at the request of Martinsville Police Chief Rick Lang. ISP First Sergeant Brad Stille determined that the K-9’s death occurred in Greene County, placing the case under the jurisdiction of Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw.

K-9, a golden retriever named Sunny, was shot and killed by its handler, Officer Michelle Weaver, in June 2025.

Weaver reported the dog exhibited aggressive behavior, first toward a child and later toward another animal. She fired two gunshots and killed Sunny.

Sunny, while being designated as the MPD K9, had not been put into service and was still in training at the time of its killing, nor was Sunny engaged in law enforcement actions.

After reviewing the completed investigation, Holtsclaw chose not to pursue charges against Martinsville Patrol Officer Michelle Weaver, who was involved in the incident.

The Indiana State Police’s role was limited to the criminal investigation. Any further questions regarding administrative or internal procedures should be directed to the Martinsville Police Department.
