BLOOMFIELD — Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH), a nonprofit that provides meat to local food pantries, has received a $3,000 grant from the UDWI REMC Community Fund, Inc. The Greene County Chapter IN-15 of FHFH will use the funds to continue its mission of combating hunger in the community.

Founded in 1997 by Rick Wilson, FHFH works with a network of hunters and farmers who donate deer harvest and livestock. The donated meat is then processed into one-pound packages of ground burger, free of charge, and distributed to nine local food pantries.
“Often, meat is the most needed, but most expensive item for food pantries,” said Brady Miller, the Greene County Chapter IN-15 coordinator. He noted that a single donated deer can provide over 200 servings of high-quality meat.
Since its formation in the early 2000s, the Greene County chapter has provided more than 43,000 pounds of meat, which equates to over 172,000 meals.
As hunting season approaches, FHFH is encouraging local hunters to donate deer to participating processors: Lighthouse Custom Meats by calling 812-645-9637 or Bloomfield Processing at 812-384-7882. Farmers interested in donating livestock can contact Brady Miller at 812-699-3444 or email greenecountyfhfh@yahoo.com. Financial donations are also accepted through the FHFH website or by contacting Miller directly. If donating through the website, one should ensure that they specify the local Greene County Chapter IN-15.
The UDWI REMC Community Fund, Inc. is supported by UDWI REMC members who voluntarily round up their electric bills to the nearest dollar. The accumulated funds are then awarded to local nonprofit organizations. Other recent grant recipients in June included the Bloomfield First Baptist Church Food Pantry, Greene County Humane Society, and Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry.
