Learn to can like a pro: Free tomato workshop coming to Paoli Aug. 30

PAOLI— The Lost River Co-op and Orange County Community Gardens will host the third installment of their Preserving Traditions series on Friday, Aug. 30, offering hands-on instruction in canning tomatoes.

The free workshop, set for 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lost River Co-op Kitchen, 26 Library St., will cover how to safely preserve whole tomatoes, salsa, and sauce using water bath canning methods. Participation is limited to 15 people, and registration is required by calling 812-723-3735.

Organizers said the class is designed for beginners and experienced home canners alike, with an emphasis on food safety and practical skills. Attendees can sign up for just this session or continue through the remainder of the six-part series.

Upcoming classes in the Preserving Traditions lineup include pickling on Sept. 20, applesauce on Oct. 11, and pumpkin processing on Nov. 8.

The Lost River Co-op and Orange County Community Gardens began the series earlier this year to help community members keep traditional food preservation skills alive while promoting self-sufficiency and healthy eating.
