INDIANA — Indiana’s deer hunting season is set to begin next month, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced several key rule changes and health advisories that hunters should be aware of. The changes, which cover everything from equipment regulations to new bag limits, aim to manage the state’s deer population and address potential disease concerns.

Key Rule Changes for 2025-2026 Season
One of the most notable changes is the new regulation regarding firearm caliber. Hunters can now use rifles with a centerfire cartridge that has a minimum bullet diameter of .219 inches (5.56 mm) or larger on both public and private lands. Additionally, the minimum caliber for muzzleloader rifles has been reduced from .44 inches to .40 inches.

Another significant update permits the use of crossbows throughout the entire archery season, which runs from October 1, 2025, to January 4, 2026. This change eliminates the previous break in crossbow use between the early and late archery seasons.
Bag limits have also been adjusted. The new statewide bag limit is six antlerless deer and one antlered deer, with the “one-buck rule” still in effect. A newly created County Antlerless Bag Limit replaces the former season-specific limits. Hunters using the bundle license can harvest a total of one antlered and two antlerless deer.
Health Concerns: CWD and EHD
Hunters are advised to be vigilant for signs of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which has been detected in two areas of Indiana. The DNR is urging hunters to take precautions to prevent the disease’s spread.

Another disease, Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), is also a concern. While cases are currently lower than usual, hunters should remain aware of their potential impact on deer populations. Symptoms of EHD in deer often include fever, swelling, and internal bleeding.
Important Dates and Regulations
The 2025-2026 deer hunting seasons are as follows:
- Reduction Zone: September 15, 2025 – January 31, 2026
- Youth Season: September 27-28, 2025
- Archery: October 1, 2025 – January 4, 2026
- Firearm: November 15-30, 2025
- Muzzleloader: December 6-21, 2025
All harvested deer must be reported within 48 hours of the harvest via an on-site check station, online, or by phone. A valid Indiana hunting license is required for all non-exempt individuals.
The DNR also provided specific guidelines for carcass disposal, strongly recommending that all discarded parts be bagged and sent to a landfill to avoid environmental contamination and disease spread.
