Volunteers needed for Weed Wrangles to combat invasive plants in Bloomington parks

BLOOMINGTON – Nature enthusiasts and community-minded individuals are invited to participate in “Weed Wrangles – Invasive Plant Awareness Days,” a series of volunteer events aimed at controlling invasive species and fostering healthier wildlife habitats. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to learn alongside experts while enjoying time in nature. The event will be held on Saturday, August 2.

Volunteers will be instrumental in removing non-native plants that threaten local ecosystems. Duties will involve bending, hiking, climbing as needed, and using sharp tools. All necessary gloves and tools will be provided on-site.

Organizers emphasize that these are working days, and participants should dress appropriately for outdoor, woodsy conditions to ensure safety and comfort. Recommended attire includes long pants and sturdy shoes. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring a hat, bug spray, a water bottle, and either a long-sleeved shirt or a t-shirt to protect against overheating, scratches, insect bites, and ticks.

The Weed Wrangles are open to volunteers aged 12 years and up. An adult must accompany volunteers under the age of 14. Additionally, all volunteers under the age of 18 are required to have an Underage Waiver of Liability signed by a parent or guardian. The digital waiver can be accessed by clicking here.

All sessions will meet at the Sycamore Shelter at Lower Cascades Park, located at the intersection of N. Old State Road 37 and Clubhouse Drive (2851 N. Old State Road 37).
