BEDFORD – The North Lawrence Career Center has announced the addition of George Sorrells, a seasoned technology expert with nearly two decades of experience in the IT field, as its new Computer Science instructor. Sorrells, known for his real-world expertise and commitment to mentorship, steps into his first official teaching role.
Sorrells brings a wealth of practical knowledge to the classroom, having served as a network administrator and director of technology. His distinguished background also includes earning a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity while residing in Zürich, Switzerland. Despite this being his inaugural year as an instructor, Sorrells is no stranger to educational environments. “Working with students and teachers was always the best part of my job,” Sorrells stated, explaining his decision to transition into teaching after returning to Indiana.
His teaching philosophy centers on mentorship, aiming to hold students to high standards while providing the necessary support for them to succeed. Sorrells is particularly keen to teach about artificial intelligence but offers a word of caution: “You can’t rely on tech unless you understand the subject first.” Students can also expect a return to traditional methods, as Sorrells plans to incorporate paper notebooks for enhanced focus in his classes. His ultimate goal as an educator is “to help students succeed at the level they want.”
Outside the classroom, Sorrells enjoys hunting, fishing, and chopping wood on his family’s Indiana farm, where he recently bagged his first Hoosier turkey. He describes his ideal teaching style as similar to Mr. Miyagi, focusing on fundamental instruction to empower students toward independent mastery. Sorrells is also a proud family man, with a son serving as a clerk for the Indiana Supreme Court, a soon-to-be daughter-in-law working as a dealer transition manager at Ford, a daughter attending medical school at IU, and his wife, Julie, who is a vice president and chief accounting officer at AMCOR.
