Altrusa International of Bedford continues community support, welcomes new faces

BEDFORD – Altrusa International of Bedford, Inc. held its July meeting at the Southland Church of Christ Annex, reaffirming its dedication to local initiatives and extending a warm welcome to prospective members. The meeting, led by President Kathleen Row, covered various community projects and acknowledged long-standing partnerships.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation to Greg Stanley, representing the Knights of Columbus. Tammy Harrell introduced Mr. Stanley, who detailed the operations and fund distribution of the Knights of Columbus’s annual Tootsie Roll Drive. The Bedford Knights of Columbus has championed this fundraising effort for 48 years, making it a consistent recipient of support within Altrusa’s yearly budget. Stanley was presented with a check from Altrusa, supplemented by additional donations from members present at the meeting.

Community engagement continued as Kelly Myers provided an update on the Avoca Little Library, located in Avoca Park. Myers reported that the library recently received a significant donation of ninety-three children’s books and forty-six adult books, underscoring its active use by numerous park visitors. Tammy Harrell’s granddaughters, Tavi, age 6, and Tatum, age 4, were pictured enjoying the library’s offerings.

President Row also facilitated the introduction of the proposed new members. Becky Bailey introduced Nancy Chambers, who brings a wealth of experience from her forty-year career with the Bedford North Lawrence school system. Additionally, Mary Barnes presented Maggy Whitlow, a former member of the Bloomington Altrusa Club who has recently relocated to Bedford.

Looking ahead, Altrusa International of Bedford announced a new service project. By the end of the year, the club plans to begin creating lap robes for residents of CORE Nursing Home. Becky Bailey and Nina Doan have already acquired a substantial amount of fleece fabric for the initiative, and Donna Rainey has generously offered to store the completed robes at her home.

The July gathering underscored Altrusa International of Bedford’s enduring commitment to enhancing the community through both financial support and direct service, while also strengthening its membership for future endeavors.
