BEDFORD — The Lawrence Circuit Court is proud to announce the swearing-in of Anah Hewetson Gouty as the Juvenile Magistrate of the court, marking a significant step forward for the judicial system in Lawrence County.

Magistrate Hewetson Gouty has served as the Juvenile Referee of the Lawrence Circuit Court since her appointment in 2019 by the Honorable Nathan G. Nikirk. Magistrate Hewetson Gouty has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to juvenile justice and the families of Lawrence County. Her dedication, experience, and deep understanding of the juvenile system have been instrumental in improving outcomes for youth and ensuring fairness in the courtroom.
With the support of State Senator Eric Koch, recent legislation was passed converting the Juvenile Referee position — previously fully funded by Lawrence County — into a Magistrate position. This legislative change shifts the majority of the financial responsibility for the position from the county to the State of Indiana, aligning Lawrence County with the compensation of nearly all other judicial officers across the state.

“This is a significant advancement for Lawrence County,” said Judge Nathan G. Nikirk, who appointed Magistrate Hewetson Gouty to the position. Judge Nikirk added, “I want to emphasize that this change does not create a new judicial officer position in Lawrence County. The full-time position of Juvenile Referee has been in place since 2014 to assist with the juvenile court caseload.”
Judge Nikirk further stated, “Effective July 1, 2025, the county Juvenile Referee position will be dissolved, and a state Juvenile Magistrate position will replace it. Consequently, there will be no need for additional staff or resources to support this role.”
Similar to the Juvenile Referee position, the Juvenile Magistrate position is appointed under statutory authority by the elected Circuit Court Judge.
“This change provides long-term stability for the role, ensures that Lawrence County receives its fair share of state resources, frees up local funds, and reinforces the sustainability of our judicial services,” said Judge Nikirk.
