BEDFORD — The City of Bedford’s Street and Sanitation Department will begin a trial run of single stream recycling on Monday, June 23, 2025.

The pilot program, designed to evaluate a more efficient recycling process, will involve the use of a standard rear-load refuse truck instead of the traditional trailer and bin setup. City officials emphasized that residents should not alter how they currently sort or set out their recyclables.
“This is a trial run only,” the city said in a public notice. “Continue separating your recyclables into red bins as usual.”
While the collection vehicle may resemble a garbage truck, city officials confirmed that all recycled materials will still be delivered to Rumpke Recycling for proper processing. If the trial proves successful, the goal is to simplify recycling pickup.
No permanent changes have been made to the city’s recycling program yet. Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the Bedford Street Department at (812) 279-9222 or email Street Commissioner David Flinn at dflinn@bedford.in.gov.
