ORLEANS – Orange County will officially launch its “America 250” bicentennial commemoration this Saturday, June 14th, with a special kick-off event in historic Congress Square from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The date holds dual significance, coinciding with Flag Day and marking 250 years since the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army.

The celebration, signaling the start of a year-long series of events, promises a colonial-style fair sponsored by the Lost River DAR. Attendees are encouraged to don period costumes and explore vendors, craft demonstrations, and information booths inside the town park square to learn more about “America 250.”
A highlight of the morning will be a special flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m. at the flagpole on the west side of the town park. Dignitaries expected to be in attendance include 8th District Congressman Mark Messmer and Senator Eric Koch, as well as local elected officials and community leaders. The Orleans American Legion Post #69 will present an honor guard and colors.
Adding to the historical ambiance, renowned Lincoln enactor Larry Elliott of Louisville will be present, portraying the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln.
Numerous community groups and individuals are slated to participate, including Ayla Steele, the 2025 Lost River DAR Good Citizen Award winner, the three Orange County Libraries, Saving Historic Orange County (SHOC), Orange County Historical Society, French Lick/West Baden Museum, Visit French Lick/West Baden, Team O.C., Ritzy Quilters Group, Safe Haven, Buffalo Springs Project, and Col. Bill Willis, state chairman for Indiana Liberty Day.
The event is spearheaded by Orange County’s America 250 Committee, a dedicated working group comprised of individuals from across the county who meet monthly to plan events, projects, and celebrations to properly mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Residents and businesses throughout Orange County are encouraged to join the “America 250” spirit this weekend by displaying flags and decorating with red, white, and blue decor.
