According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Zakry E. Brooking, officers were initially dispatched to the area of 17th and H Streets around 2:27 a.m. on Sunday in response to reports of two men yelling. Upon arrival, Sgt. Shelhart and Officer Brooking observed a man chasing Christopher Lee Simmons down the street while yelling.

Officers separated the two men and began to investigate. The man chasing Simmons was observed with visible scrapes and bleeding on his right leg, left knee, right arm, mouth, and face. He initially told officers that Simmons had “pushed him off the whole staircase” and later stated that Simmons had pushed him into a curb. The injured man also reported that it was common for Simmons to get drunk and fight with others at the residence. Both men appeared to have been drinking heavily.

Initially, neither party wished to press charges, and officers advised them to go inside and separate for the remainder of the night.

However, at approximately 3:02 a.m., police were called again to the residence by the initial complainant, who reported that Simmons and the earlier injured male were back outside yelling. Officers again intervened, and while attempts were made to de-escalate the situation, conflicting accounts emerged regarding access to the wounded man’s room, leading to further altercations.

Later that day, at approximately 12:08 p.m., Bedford IU Health Hospital contacted the Bedford Police Department to report that the injured man was in the emergency room and wished to file charges. The male told Officer Duprey that after the initial police visit, he went to his room and locked the door, but Simmons allegedly kicked in the door. He also claimed that his bedroom had been “destroyed” and that his gaming monitor and PlayStation were broken. The injured male stated that after he was pushed, Simmons “started beating him.” He recalled Simmons’ father being present at one point, telling Simmons to stop.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23, the injured man came to the Bedford Police Department and formally requested that charges be filed against Christopher Lee Simmons for battery.

An arrest warrant was requested for Simmons. Simmons was detained on Sunday, June 1.
