BEDFORD – A Mitchell woman was arrested on drunk driving charges after being stopped for speeding in Bedford.
Karmin Shutters, 38, was arrested on Saturday, May 24, on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while Intoxicated, OWI endangerment, and OWI Per Se (pending blood draw) and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Officer Taylor Daugherty of the Bedford Police Department, the incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 12:06 a.m.. Officer Daugherty was patrolling southbound on State Road 37 when he observed a dark blue 2010 Chevrolet Impala traveling at a high rate of speed in the left lane. Using in-car radar, the vehicle’s speed was verified at 68 MPH in a posted 55 MPH zone.
Officer Daugherty initiated a traffic stop on State Road 37 near 39th Street. Upon making contact with the driver, Karmin Shutters, Officer Daugherty immediately detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. When asked about her speed, Shutters pointed to her speedometer and stated, “I had it on 60, I don’t know.”
Shutters advised that she had been to work and then to Shorty’s Bar and Grill, where she had consumed two beers. She agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which she failed. Officer Daugherty noted that Shutters’ breath and person smelled of alcohol, and her eyes were glossy and bloodshot.
A preliminary breath test administered to Shutters yielded a result of 0.117 BrAC (grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath). After being read her Miranda Warning and Indiana Implied Consent, Shutters stated she understood and submitted to a certified chemical test. She was then transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a certified blood draw.
Following the blood draw, Karmin Shutters was transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing. Her vehicle was inventoried and towed by Jackson’s Heavy Haul.
