Michigan man’s body pulled from Sugar Creek

SUGAR CREEK – Indiana Conservation Officers have completed their investigation after a man’s body was recovered from Sugar Creek Friday night.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., Indiana Conservation Officers received a report that a man had disappeared under the water near the suspension bridge in Turkey Run State Park.

Later that evening, first responders recovered the body of Maximo Disla-Garcia, 56, of Wyoming, Michigan. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and Disla-Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene by the Parke County Coroner’s Office.

Witnesses said Disla-Garcia entered the water to help a young female struggling in the strong current. He was then overtaken by the current downstream into a strainer of rocks and debris, forced under the water, and never resurfaced. The young female self-rescued, uninjured.

The preliminary results of an autopsy conducted this morning at Terre Haute Regional Hospital determined the cause of death to be accidental drowning.

Other responding agencies included the Marshall Fire Department, Bellmore Fire Department, Montezuma Fire Department, Bloomingdale Fire Department, and Parke County Emergency Medical Service.
