MONROE CO. – Several Monroe County residents were impacted by a strong storm and tornado that caused widespread damage. The following is some helpful information to help residents and businesses start the recovery process:
Sheltering and Resources
The American Red Cross hosts a shelter and resource center at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers. For the shelter, please enter through door 4 of the church. Anyone who needs assistance from the Red Cross can call the hotline at 1-800-733-2767 at any time.
Reporting Storm Damage
Residents are encouraged to report any residential or structural damage using Indiana 211. To submit a report, individuals can visit in211.org and click on Damage Reporting.
Those without access to the internet can dial 211 or 866-211-9966. Please submit a report if you received damage to your house from the May 16 storm.
Debris Cleanup
Property owners with storm-damaged trees and vegetation debris are welcome to take the debris to the Monroe County Debris Management Site, located at 7740 North Fish Road, Bloomington, IN 47408, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please only take trees and vegetation debris to this location.
County officials are developing a plan for house debris, household appliances, and other debris and a debris site closer to the impacted area. Once all of the immediate needs of residents have been met, an update will be provided through another press release.

This is a free debris cleanup assistance service provided by the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief of Indiana.
Storm Relief Supplies Available for Pick Up
Residents impacted by the May 16th tornado are welcome to pick up tarps and totes at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 East Rogers Street.
Residents can pick up supplies on the following days:
Monday, May 19 – 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, May 20 – 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Donations
Donations of ONLY tarps and totes are being accepted. If interested in donating tarps or totes for storm survivors, you may drop off your donation at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church on the following dates and times:
- Monday, May 19 – 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 20 – 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
No other donations will be accepted at this time.
Volunteering
Due to the damage and current hazardous conditions, please don’t spontaneously volunteer at this
time.
The Monroe County Emergency Management office will help coordinate volunteer opportunities soon as everything is safe. Please monitor the local Monroe County and community agencies for updates on this. An additional press release will be sent out with information and instructions on how you can volunteer soon.
