MONROE CO. – Several Monroe County residents were impacted by a strong storm and tornado that caused widespread damage. Monroe County officials and first responders are working to provide for residents with immediate life-safety needs. The following is some helpful information to help residents and businesses start the recovery process:
Current Power Outages
Duke Energy reports 838 outages, and UDWI REMC reports approximately 600 current outages as of May 17 at 12:40 p.m. Both electrical companies continue to restore power. Please be patient, as the infrastructure throughout the county was damaged.
Sheltering
The American Red Cross continues to host a shelter at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers. For the shelter, please enter through door 4 of the church. Anyone who needs assistance from the Red Cross can call the hotline at 1-800-733-2767 anytime.
Reporting Storm Damage
Residents are encouraged to report any residential or structural damage by using Indiana 211. Individuals can visit in211.org and click on DAMAGE REPORTING to submit a report. Those without access to the internet can dial 2-1-1 or 866-211-9966. Please submit a report if you received damage to your house from the May 16 storm.
Debris Cleanup
Property owners with storm-damaged trees and vegetation debris are welcome to take the debris to the Monroe County Debris Management Site, located at 7740 North Fish Road, Bloomington, IN 47408, starting Monday, May 19th, at 9:00 a.m. Please only take trees and vegetation debris to this location. County officials are developing a plan for house debris, household appliances, etc.
Another press release will provide an update once all of the residents’ immediate needs have been met.
Monroe County agencies are starting to work with nonprofit disaster relief agencies to arrange cleanup teams to help residents who require assistance with storm debris cleanup.
