Ambitious Monon Train mural project gains steam in Orleans

ORLEANS—What started as a creative vision to adorn Orange County with striking public art is rapidly becoming a reality. The Town of Orleans and the Orange County Economic Development Partnership (OCEDP) are collaborating to create a large-scale mural depicting a historic Monon train traversing the scenic Orleans farmland.

Inspired by vintage photographs of the Monon South Railroad and the local agricultural landscape, the concept garnered enthusiastic support from Springer Brothers Farms, owners of the prominent grain bins that will serve as the mural’s canvas. The artwork aims to celebrate the region’s rich history and enhance the Monon South Trail, a local asset believed to hold significant potential for Orleans and the broader Orange County community.

When the Indiana Destination Development Corporation grant opportunity arose, project organizers recognized its potential to fuel the initiative and swiftly embarked on fundraising efforts.

Bloomington-based artist Adam Long is leading the artistic execution of this ambitious project. Renowned throughout Southern Indiana for his captivating public art installations, Long has a demonstrated talent for large-scale, intricately detailed murals. The Orleans community eagerly anticipates his interpretation of this historical scene.

The project has already garnered significant support from corporate and community partners, and organizers express deep gratitude for their contributions. However, fundraising efforts continue to support the final phase of the mural’s creation. Individuals and businesses interested in contributing to this significant public art piece are encouraged to contact the OCEDP at 812-936-3388 for more information on how to support the project.
