The Seymour Fire Department reported receiving a call at approximately 12:37 a.m. on Monday. Upon arriving at the facility, they found the building engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the building’s fire alarm and sprinkler system had already been activated, providing crucial early warnings and suppression efforts.

Firefighters successfully contained the blaze to a single room within the facility. Their initial investigation suggests the fire originated due to an electrical or mechanical malfunction in a wall-mounted heating and air conditioning unit.

Thanks to the swift actions of the facility staff, many residents had already been safely evacuated upon the fire department’s arrival. However, firefighters encountered a bedridden patient who was unable to evacuate independently. Utilizing a stretcher provided by Jackson County medics, firefighters safely removed the patient from the building.

To ensure the comfort and safety of the displaced residents, Seymour Community Schools were contacted and generously provided a bus for transportation to a local hotel. Firefighters assisted the residents with check-in, ensuring they had a safe and comfortable place to stay.

The Seymour Fire Department confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or staff, and all residents were accounted for. The affected heating and cooling unit has been taken to the fire department for a more thorough investigation to determine the precise cause of the malfunction.
