Orange County gears up for America 250 Kick-Off with Colonial Fair in Orleans

ORLEANS – Orange County is finalizing plans for its official kick-off to the America 250 celebration, set to take place on Flag Day, June 14th (also marks the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army) in historic Congress Square in Orleans. This event will signal the beginning of a year-long commemoration leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

A colonial-style fair is planned for the kick-off, with attendees encouraged to embrace the era’s spirit by dressing in period costumes. The town park square in Orleans will host vendors, craft demonstrators, and information booths throughout the day on that Saturday. A special flag-raising ceremony featuring reenactors in period attire is also a key part of the event.

The Orange County America 250 committee, comprised of representatives from various segments across the county, has been meeting monthly since late last summer to orchestrate events, projects, and celebrations for this significant anniversary.

Beyond the Orleans kick-off, other key events are planned for Paoli, French Lick, and West Baden. Building on the success of the “Slices of Orange” gatherings held for the state and county bicentennials in 2016, similar Community Gatherings are being organized for this coming fall in Orangeville (September 7th), Stampers Creek (September 21st), Northeast Township (September 28th), and Greenfield Township (October 12th), with Roger Moon coordinating these efforts. Additional Community Gatherings are slated for Southeast, Northwest, and Jackson Townships in the spring of 2026.

The committee aims to showcase Orange County’s rich history, including its early settlers, significant residents, historic sites, and museums. Plans are also underway to develop displays, special exhibits, and programs across the county leading up to and during the anniversary year.

To engage the younger generation, a student essay contest is being planned for all three county schools and homeschooled students.

The 175th Anniversary of the Orange County Courthouse will also be highlighted later in 2025, alongside a special recognition of area veterans.

Residents can stay informed about planned activities and the latest happenings across Orange County by following the committee’s newly launched Facebook page: Orange County America 250.

The Orange County 250 committee will meet on June 8th at 6:00 p.m. at the Paoli Library. Individuals interested in contributing to the planning efforts are encouraged to attend.
