BEDFORD—The Bedford Hiking Club and the Indiana Volkssport Association invite the public to a scenic walk through Amish country near Montgomery, Indiana, on Saturday, May 17th. This event is part of a Volkswalk series, offering a five- and 10-kilometer (approximately 3.1 and 6.2 miles) route showcasing Indiana’s picturesque landscapes.
Walkers can sign in on the porch of the Gasthof Restaurant between 9:00 a.m. and noon and should complete their walk by 3:00 p.m. Participants can choose between the shorter 3.1-mile option or the longer 6.2-mile walk, which takes them past several Amish farms and an Amish school. A unique highlight of the 10K route includes a stop where three Amish homesteads are situated closely together, and the families have extended a welcome to visitors to stop in their barnyards for conversation and to answer questions.
Participating in the walk costs $4. While snacks will be available, participants are encouraged to stay for lunch at the Gasthof Restaurant, renowned for its delicious Amish cuisine.

Both walking options also include a visit to the small rural town of Montgomery, featuring a large historic feed mill along the railroad tracks. Above the town sits St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Indiana’s second-oldest Catholic Church. It is noted for its beautiful architecture, including stained-glass windows, intricate arches, and interesting sculptures in its gardens.
The walking routes are fairly level and follow gravel or paved roads and sidewalks. Due to the presence of Amish buggies, traffic in the area tends to move at a slower pace. Participants are welcome to take photographs, but are asked to respect the Amish community’s preference not to have their faces or close-up photos taken.

The Volkswalk will start and end at the Gasthof Village Restaurant, which also features charming shops and a bakery. Additionally, Dinky’s Auction House, nearby, will be hosting a pony auction that day, drawing many Amish residents to the area. Visitors interested in exploring local Amish businesses for plants, food, woodworking, or even carriages can receive directions.
Join the Bedford Hiking Club’s volkswalk on May 17th for a fun and engaging way to experience the beauty of Daviess County and learn more about the local Amish community. For further information, don’t hesitate to contact Teena Ligman at 812-278-0139 or email tdligman@att.net..
