INDIANA – General Motors (GM) has issued a safety recall affecting specific 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 full-size trucks, as well as several other large SUV models, due to potential manufacturing defects in their 6.2L V8 L87 engines. These defects could lead to a loss of propulsion, engine damage, and even engine failure.
The recall comes after a period of lawsuits, investigations, and reports of engine replacements related to consistent issues with the specified engine. GM acknowledged the situation, stating, “GM will voluntarily recall certain 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV models equipped with 6.2L L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”
GM has identified that the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components in the affected vehicles may have unspecified manufacturing defects.
Engines with these faulty components could experience a loss of power while driving and ultimately suffer engine failure, significantly increasing the risk of an accident.
Owners of affected Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks will be notified by GM and instructed to bring their vehicles in for inspection. Trucks that pass the inspection will receive an engine oil and filter change, using a higher-viscosity 0W-40 Mobil 1 Supercar oil, a change from the 0W-20 oil recommended in the owner’s manual for L87 engines. The engine oil fill cap will also be replaced to reflect the new oil type. GM has not yet detailed the course of action for trucks that fail the inspection, but engine replacement is a likely possibility.
