Fatal crash involves Purdue’s Boilermaker Special in Tippecanoe County

TIPPECANOE CO. – One person was killed Thursday afternoon in a collision involving Purdue University’s Boilermaker Special mascot vehicle on U.S. 52 near Wyandotte Road in southeastern Tippecanoe County, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:58 p.m. when the Boilermaker Special was traveling northbound. For reasons currently unknown, the vehicle crossed the median and struck a passenger car traveling southbound.  

The driver of the passenger car, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two individuals who were on the Boilermaker Special sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a Lafayette hospital for treatment.  

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction team is currently investigating the cause of the tragic accident. The name of the deceased has not been released, pending identification by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including the Sheffield Fire Department, Tippecanoe Emergency Ambulance Service, Indiana State Police, and Tippecanoe County Emergency Management.
