GREENE CO. – Quick-thinking residents were able to safely evacuate their home early Sunday morning after working smoke alarms alerted them to a fire in the 8000 block of East State Road 54 near Ridgeport. The Eastern Greene Fire Territory reported no injuries in the incident.

Firefighters were dispatched to the residence at approximately 2:36 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, in response to a report of a porch fire that was extending towards the home. The first fire unit arrived on the scene at approximately 2:42 a.m. and confirmed that the fire had spread into the residence, actively burning along the roofline.
Engine 31 arrived shortly thereafter, and fire crews initiated an interior attack, entering the structure through the front and side doors. However, shortly into the operation, interior crews who entered through the front were forced to withdraw due to the collapse of approximately 20 feet of ceiling. This collapse compromised hose lines and created hazardous conditions for the firefighters. Crews entering from the side of the structure were able to maintain their position and contained the fire to the roofline.

Fire officials stated that high winds originating from the rear of the residence played a significant role in the rapid spread of the fire, which ultimately caused heavy damage to the home.
Fortunately, the residence was equipped with functioning smoke alarms, which effectively alerted the occupants, allowing them crucial time to escape the burning structure without injury.
Following an investigation, it has been determined that the fire was accidental in nature.

The homeowner had insurance coverage, and SERVPRO of Bloomington, Indiana, assisted with some immediate clothing and supplies.
The Eastern Greene Fire Territory expressed its gratitude to Richland Township Fire & Rescue, Taylor Township Fire Department, Monroe Fire Protection District, and Greene County Ambulance Service E1 for their valuable assistance at the scene. The successful outcome, with no injuries reported, highlights the critical importance of having working smoke alarms in every home.
