Commissioners approve funding resolution for Rural Transit

LAWRENCE CO. – The Lawrence County Commissioners have unanimously passed a resolution to contribute funding to Rural Transit Lawrence County, ensuring the continuation of vital transportation services for county residents. The county’s share of the budget amounts to $8,000.

Commissioner Jeff McKnight highlighted the regional impact of Rural Transit, explaining that the service covers four counties, including Lawrence. He further noted the significant utilization of the service by Lawrence County residents, stating that approximately 23 percent of all rides provided by Rural Transit are for individuals within the county. Impressively, Rural Transit delivers over 6,000 rides within Lawrence County alone.

Rural Transit Lawrence County provides accessible bus services to all residents, regardless of age or physical ability. The service connects rural areas with towns, enabling individuals to access essential destinations such as shopping centers, pharmacies, grocery stores, medical appointments, and employment opportunities. Residents can also utilize the service to visit friends, state parks, universities like Ivy Tech, and hospitals.

Offering a convenient door-to-door service, Rural Transit requires riders to schedule their trips 3 to 5 days in advance. Reservations are mandatory, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available to accommodate all passengers.

Rural Transit also operates as a Medicaid transit provider under the Area 10 Council on Aging. For Medicaid-related transportation inquiries, residents can contact Verida at 855-325-7586. Standard fares are collected at the time of service, and discounted passes are available for purchase from the drivers, with payment accepted in cash or check. The Commissioners’ approval of this funding resolution underscores their commitment to supporting essential services that enhance the quality of life for all Lawrence County residents.
