TRAFALGAR– A devastating barn fire in Trafalgar on Saturday afternoon resulted in the deaths of more than two dozen animals.

According to the Trafalgar Fire Department, firefighters responded to a call in the 2800 block of Johnson County Road 750S shortly after 4 p.m. Upon arrival, crews discovered a barn engulfed in flames, with an estimated 70 to 80 bales of hay and straw actively burning inside.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, mutual aid was requested from neighboring fire departments. Firefighters from Edinburgh and Amity arrived on the scene to assist Trafalgar crews in extinguishing the fire and conducting overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.

While no human injuries were reported, the fire tragically claimed the lives of numerous animals housed in the barn. The Trafalgar Fire Department confirmed that 22 chickens, five goats, five guineas, and three rabbits perished in the blaze.

Following an investigation, the fire has been officially ruled accidental. Firefighters believe an electrical malfunction within the barn caused the fire.
