Quick-thinking EMS crew rescues four dogs from burning Monroe County home

MONROE CO. – On the morning of Friday, April 11th, the Monroe Fire Protection District (MFD) responded swiftly to a reported structure fire in the 6900 block of South McCormick Lane. Initial 911 call reports indicated smoke near the intersection of South Fairfax Road and South McCormick Lane.

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy in the area when the call came in quickly located the actual fire on South McCormick Lane. The deputy reported visible flames emanating from the residence and noted that the home appeared to be boarded up, with the occupancy status unknown.

MFD Ambulance 22 was the first unit to arrive on the scene and discovered heavy fire venting from a window of the dwelling. With the immediate concern for potential occupants inside the burning structure, the ambulance crew bravely donned their fire protective gear and initiated a primary search.

During their rapid search of the smoke-filled home, the ambulance crew located four dogs and successfully rescued them from the dangerous environment. Tragically, one cat was later found deceased within the residence.

As the initial search was underway, additional firefighters arrived on the scene and deployed hose lines into the structure. Within minutes of their entry, the firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze.

The home sustained significant fire damage as it was reportedly undergoing renovation at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no human injuries were reported, and the homeowner was not present when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the MFD Fire Marshal.

The four rescued dogs were safely transported to the local animal shelter for the evening, ensuring their well-being after their harrowing experience.

The Monroe Fire Protection District’s swift and effective response involved a significant deployment of resources, including MFD Ambulance 22, Engines 22, 21, 23, 29, 39, Battalion 22, Chief 23, and the MFD Fire Marshal.

The quick actions of the initial ambulance crew in conducting a primary search and rescuing the animals highlight the dedication and bravery of first responders in Monroe County.
