Rural and urban Hoosiers unite to protect essential healthcare coverage, demand no cuts to Medicaid

STATEHOUSE– In response to proposed cuts to Medicaid at the state and federal levels, Indiana Medicaid members, providers, and their loved ones are joining together for a rally to protect our care.

On April 1, hundreds of Hoosiers from over 50 of Indiana’s House Districts will travel to the Statehouse to demand that Indiana’s General Assembly and Governor Braun protect Medicaid funding. This essential safety-net program provides healthcare coverage for nearly 2 million Hoosier children, adults, and elders.

Proposed cuts to Medicaid programs risk the lives, health, and economic stability of all Hoosiers. Extreme changes to Indiana’s Medicaid programs are being debated, including the $880 billion cuts to Medicaid in the House of Representatives budget Resolution passed in February. Cuts to Indiana’s Medicaid programs are also proposed by SB 2, a state bill currently before the Indiana General Assembly, Although SB 2 has been significantly improved by amendments following widespread public objection to Medicaid enrollment caps, harmful provisions remain in SB 2 which could result in more than an estimated 150,000 Medicaid members losing their healthcare coverage due to paperwork errors. According to the bill’s fiscal note, SB 2 would make Indiana’s Medicaid programs “significantly” more expensive to run and cover fewer people by adding costly new work reporting requirements to HIP and additional eligibility verifications to all Medicaid programs.

On April 1, a diverse group of Medicaid members, providers, faith, and community leaders will share their own experiences with Medicaid to underscore the program’s significance to Hoosiers of every age, race, and ability across the state and call on our state’s elected officials to oppose cuts to Medicaid.
