BLOOMINGTON—A startling discovery was made Wednesday in a wooded area near Interstate 69, as a land clearing crew unearthed what appeared to be human bones, according to the Bloomington Police Department. The remains were found in the 1000 block of West Acuff Road, approximately one mile north of the state roads 45 and 46 interchange.
“A crew clearing land on Wednesday found bones that appeared to be human,” confirmed the Bloomington Police Department in a statement released Thursday night.
The Monroe County coroner was immediately notified following the discovery, and a forensic anthropology team from Indianapolis was dispatched to the scene on Thursday to assist in the meticulous recovery of the skeletal remains. Authorities are now working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the discovery and to identify the individual.
“An identity has not yet been determined,” police stated, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The location, a wooded area off a major interstate, has become the focus of intense scrutiny as investigators attempt to ascertain how long the remains have been there and the potential cause of death. The forensic anthropology team’s involvement underscores the case’s complexity and the need for specialized expertise in handling skeletal remains.
The Bloomington Police Department has not released further details, as the investigation remains active. They are expected to provide updates as more information becomes available.
