BLOOMINGTON– Fort Wayne native Amanda Zurawaski, just named to Time magazine’s list of 2025 Women of the Year, is coming back home to help raise awareness of the need to restore reproductive rights to Hoosier women.
Zurawaski, who was denied necessary health care when her pregnancy was compromised the week Texas’ abortion ban was imposed, is the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary about the real-life impact of Texas’ abortion ban on women needing reproductive health care. Time magazine’s listing was announced yesterday.
Hoosiers who want to learn more about – or who are already supporting the battle to restore reproductive rights to Indiana women – are encouraged to attend events where Zurawaski will speak about her case at two private screenings of the critically acclaimed documentary film “Zurawski v. Texas.”
The film follows Zurawski and two other plaintiffs from Texas who were denied abortion care even though they faced life-threatening pregnancy complications. In Zurawski’s case, her fertility may be compromised as a result of being denied what had for years – in Indiana and Texas – been considered standard medical care.
“We look forward to an evening celebrating the bravery of Amanda and her fellow plaintiffs, who inspire us to keep going on our own, very similar fight in Indiana,” said Our Choice Coalition Co-Founder and Board Chair Liane Groth Hulka. “After being the first state to ban abortion in 2022 when the U.S. Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, Indiana lawmakers have continued to restrict reproductive rights despite overwhelming evidence that Hoosiers think the state’s current ban goes too far..”
Zurawski is the lead plaintiff in the case filed in March 2023, which sought to clarify the scope of Texas’ “medical emergency” exception under its state abortion bans. The Texas Supreme Court denied the claims ultimately brought by 20 women who were denied abortion care despite facing dangerous pregnancy complications. The court refused to clarify the state’s exceptions to its abortion bans.
“Much like in Indiana, physicians in Texas are unclear about the circumstances under which they can use their own medical judgment to provide abortion care without fear of prosecution,” Hulka said. “It’s unconscionable. Only by continuing to raise awareness can we hope to make women safe again. This documentary is a great way to fully understand the danger women are in when they cannot access proper medical care.”

The OCC will use proceeds from ticket sales to support candidates who share the coalition’s position that women should be able to make private reproductive healthcare decisions without governmental interference.
The OCC joined forces with Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates, ACLU of Indiana, All Options, Good Trouble Coalition, Hoosier Jews for Choice, Indiana TaskFORCE, ACOG, and Women4Change for Reproductive Health Lobby Day on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The groups sought to meet with legislators as they rallied for reproductive rights and demanded policies that protect healthcare in Indiana.
