Mitchell woman arrested after caught on video attacking a male

MITCHELL – Jessica D. Coryea, 34, of Mitchell, was arrested on Monday, February 17, following an alleged domestic fight at a residence on Stevens Lane.

Coryea is charged with domestic battery and strangulation, both Level 6 felonies.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Lawrence County Police Officer Robin Compton Jr., law enforcement responded to a call from a male who reported he had been battered by his soon-to-be ex, Jessica Coryea. Upon arrival, officers noted visible scratches on the male’s face, redness around his neck, and blood on his shirt and jacket.

The male stated that Jessica Coryea had come to his residence to retrieve belongings despite being told not to. He alleged that an argument ensued, during which she climbed onto his back, wrapped her arms around his neck, making it difficult for him to breathe, and also struck him multiple times in the face. He stated he bit her finger to get her off of him.

The male told deputies that he began recording the incident as he continued to remove items from Jessica’s vehicle. The recording, which officers reviewed, reportedly shows Jessica Coryea yelling at him before again jumping on his back and placing her arm over his shoulder, clasping her hands against his cheek and neck area.

Jessica Coryea, after being advised of her Miranda rights, told officers that she had come to retrieve belongings and that her ex had thrown her away from the vehicle, leading to a physical altercation in the driveway during which he bit her finger. She declined medical attention.

Jessica Coryea was detained and transported to the Lawrence County Security Center.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
