Mums featured at Saturday’s Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market

BLOOMINGTON—Mum is the abbreviated word for “chrysanthemum.” It comes from the Greek words “chrysos,” meaning gold, and “anthemion,” meaning flower. In the language of flowers, the chrysanthemum symbolizes devoted love, loyalty, happiness, longevity, and joy.

These flowers are native to Asia and northeastern Europe and are the official flower for November birthdays. The original wildflowers featured golden-colored blossoms, but by 1630, more than 500 cultivars had been identified and recorded.

Today, it’s estimated that more than 20,000 chrysanthemum varieties exist, each ornate in its own way.

Come to the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market this Saturday and select your plant from the beautiful array of this fall favorite. The market is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Showers Commons at 401 North Morton Street.
