Obituary: Melinda Jayne Johnson

December 17, 1945 – November 1, 2026

Melinda Jayne Johnson drew her first breath on December 17th, 1945, and her final breath on November 1st, 2026. She was the firstborn of William (Bill) and Jane (Cox) Holtsclaw, who both preceded her in death.

Melinda was the older sister of Martha Craig (of Needmore), Nancy Stewart (of Oolitic), and David Holtsclaw (of Springville).

She was the mother of Kelly (Russell) Algood, Michelle (Richard) Villar, Melisa (Ma) Sha, and Pat (Kathy) Johnson.

She was a proud grandmother to Ben and Clay Collison, Jeff, David, and Stewart Algood, Rachelle, Richard, and Charlie Villar, Zach Stackhouse, Nicholas Sha, and Patrick and Meagan Johnson.

She was affectionately known as “Granny-Great” by Olivia, Aubrey, Lily, Sloane, and Klein.

Melinda was a graduate of Oolitic High School, Class of 1963. During her high school years, she was an active member of the school band, where she played the trombone, was a baton twirler, and served as a drum majorette. Her love of music, particularly marching bands, remained with her throughout her life.

Melinda retired as an Engineering Technician with the Primary Battery Division at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane. Throughout her life, she also worked at Sears Vision Center and H&R Block. She enjoyed collecting and selling Longaberger baskets for many years.

Music was one of Melinda’s lifelong passions. She especially loved listening to and attending concerts featuring Southern Gospel and a cappella music, as well as drum and bugle corps and marching band competitions. Among her favorite musical groups were The Gaithers, The Kingsmen, The Martins, and Straight No Chaser.

Melinda also had a special fondness for bells and owls, having amassed large collections of both over the years. She enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and sightseeing, especially during the fall when she loved taking in the breathtaking beauty of the changing leaves and the vibrant colors of the season.

Those who truly knew Melinda will always remember her wonderfully mischievous nature and the unmistakable look that accompanied it. There was a certain twinkle in her eye and a playful expression that often hinted she was up to something. From her high school friends to the caring staff at Bella’s Place, those who spent time with her fondly recalled seeing that familiar look. Her quick wit and devilish charm never failed to bring smiles and laughter to those around her. It was a special part of who she was, and one that will be remembered with great affection.

Above all else, the most important part of Melinda’s life was her unwavering belief and faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Her Christian faith was the foundation of her life and held a special place in her heart.

Melinda leaves behind a loving family, countless cherished memories, and a legacy that will live on through her family and friends.

A Celebration of Life honoring Melinda will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Avoca Baptist Church Community Building.

In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe page has been established to help fund the construction of a gazebo at Bella’s Place, located at 1019 Bella’s Place in Bedford, Indiana, in loving memory of Melinda.
