Two arrested, released after suspicious activity prompts precautionary measures at Brownstown Elementary School

BROWNSTOWN — Two were taken into custody Friday morning after a school resource officer spotted suspicious behavior outside Brownstown Elementary School, prompting precautionary lockdowns and a swift police investigation. However, both were released hours later after prosecutors determined no criminal charges would be filed.

According to the Brownstown Police Department (BPD), the incident unfolded Friday morning when a school resource officer stationed at the elementary school observed an adult male acting suspiciously on school grounds.

Following a preliminary investigation, police detained a male and a female on preliminary allegations of bringing a firearm onto school property. In response to the potential security concern, school staff immediately enacted standard precautionary safety protocols to secure students and facilities while law enforcement investigated the threat.

As the investigation continued, officers consulted directly with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office regarding the circumstances of the incident. Following a review of the evidence and statutory guidelines, authorities concluded that no criminal charges were warranted.

Both were released hours after their initial arrest. Details about the weapon or what specifically triggered the initial suspicion were not disclosed.

School officials and local law enforcement praised the swift vigilance of the school resource officer and staff, whose rapid response ensured that campus safety protocols were successfully maintained throughout the morning scare. Normal operations resumed at the school following the clearance of the scene.
