UPDATE: Seven hospitalized after Halloween weekend shooting on Kirkwood Avenue; One arrested as investigation continues

BLOOMINGTON — An early-morning disturbance along the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue erupted into gunfire on Sunday, November 1, 2026, leaving seven people hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

According to the Bloomington Police Department (BPD), officers from BPD and the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) were monitoring a large crowd gathered in the area near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street at approximately 1:30 a.m. Officers heard multiple gunshots ring out near 420 E. Kirkwood Avenue and immediately converged on the scene.

Investigators attempted to interview all seven individuals who suffered gunshot wounds at area hospitals. The victims—comprising four males and three females ranging in age from 17 to 27—all traveled to Bloomington from outside the area to celebrate Halloween weekend, with six listing home addresses in Indianapolis and one from Greenwood. None of the injured individuals are believed to be students at Indiana University.

While three of the victims reportedly required surgery, all seven individuals are currently listed in stable condition. Authorities noted that one of the injured victims was in possession of an AK-47 pistol at the time of the shooting, which was subsequently recovered by law enforcement. No fatalities have been reported.

Crime scene investigators discovered numerous spent shell casings of various calibers on the sidewalk near 420 East Kirkwood Avenue. Ballistics and witness reports indicate that at least two different firearm calibers were used, with witnesses hearing between four and six total gunshots.

During the initial response, officers observed a male suspect fleeing the area on foot toward Dunn Meadow carrying a firearm. Following a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended east of Indiana Avenue, and an AR-15-style handgun was recovered nearby.

The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old Indianapolis man with a pending felony weapon charge in Hendricks County, was arrested and remanded to jail. He is currently facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and unlawful possession of a firearm. Police have not yet definitively established whether he fired rounds during the incident, and the investigation into who fired the shots remains ongoing.

Preliminary information suggests the shooting followed a disturbance within a large crowd assembled on Kirkwood Avenue.
